Clonmacnoise Monastic Site

St Ciarán founded his monastery on the banks of the River Shannon in the 6th Century.  The monastery flourished and became a great seat of learning, a University of its time with students from all over Europe. The ruins include a Cathedral, two round Towers, three high crosses, nine Churches and over 700 Early Christian graveslabs. The original high crosses, including the magnificent 10th century Cross of the Scriptures are on display in a purpose built visitor centre adjacent to the monastic enclosure. An audiovisual presentation will give you an insight into the history of this hallowed space. April 2026 Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran T.D., welcomed the signing of a contract with Kelbuild Ltd for the major redevelopment of the visitor centre at Clonmacnoise, Co. Offaly on 1 April 2026. The project has been awarded €7.8million in funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme, which is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the EU Just Transition fund. The redevelopment will include the construction of a new extension, refurbishment of the existing visitor centre, and the provision of a new interpretation and exhibition space incorporating immersive audio-visual experiences and digital interactivity. External works will include a new entrance courtyard, improved coach and car parking, and enhanced wayfinding and landscaping. The monastic site at Clonmacnoise will remain open to the public during the construction phase. Temporary facilities, including public toilets and a Welcome Hub, are in place to ensure continuity of visitor services.
