Carrigafoyle Castle
Families can explore the ruins of Carrigafoyle Castle, a strong fortress from the 1500s. You can walk on the old dock and see views of the Shannon estuary from the battlements.
Built between 1490 and 1500, Carrigafoyle Castle is considered one of the strongest Irish fortresses. It stands on a rock in a small bay off the Shannon estuary, and its name is an Anglicisation of the Irish, Carraig an Phoill or "rock of the hole".
Explore this listed National Monument and the stunning views that its battlements offer of the estuary. Walk out on the very dock that the O'Connors of Kerry used to inspect ships passing to and from Limerick during their reign of power in the 1500s.
