Take a boat trip to Innisfallen Island to see the ruins of a 12th-century priory and an 11th-century church, where ancient Irish history was once recorded.

Spanning a mere 21 acres, Innisfallen Island is near the northern end of Lough Leane and about 1.5km from the shore off Ross Castle, in Killarney, County Kerry.

A monastery was founded on Innisfallen in the 7th century and it became a seat of learning. It is said that King Brian Boru studied there. On the island are the remains of the extensive 12th century Augustinian priory and a small 11th -12th century Romanesque church.

The Annals of Innisfallen, a chronicle of world and Irish history in Irish and Latin (now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford), were compiled here by a succession of 39 monastic scribes.

Boat trips to the island operate from Reen pier, close to Ross Castle.
