Millennium Garden of Time, Youghal, Cork

Families can explore the Millennium Garden of Time in Youghal, which features ponds with unique fountain clocks telling different aspects of time.

The Millennium Garden of Time is located in Youghal, County Cork. Developed on about half a hectare of land at a cost of about €317,500, the project was initiated by the local Tidy Town Committee and took nine months to construct.

The garden, which is based on the Chi-Rho page from the Book of Kells - an abbreviated monogram in Greek for the name of Christ - features a number of ponds. Each one contains a fountain clock and tells a different aspect of time. One of the ponds contains two entwined serpents, which are much in evidence in the Book of Kells; as they rotate, they spout water to the numerals on the circumference, thereby telling the time in minutes and hours. Another pond contains a large circular ceramic tablet with four illuminated evangelists.
