Walk across the old railway viaduct, which has seven arches, and get some grand views of the river and the area around it. It's part of the Great Western Greenway.
Built in the early 1890’s using local sandstone, Newport Railway Viaduct was once part of the railway line linking Newport to Achill Island. Its most notable feature is its seven arches.
The last train to cross the viaduct was in 1937. However, Newport Railway Viaduct is still very much in use today. It's one of the highlights of the Great Western Greenway, the 42km route linking Westport to Achill Island. Visitors can walk across the viaduct and are rewarded with stunning views of the river and surrounding landscape. At night, it’s illuminated by floodlights, highlighting its architectural beauty against the backdrop of the night sky.
Newport Railway Viaduct is a few minutes walk from Newport, just off the N59 Westport Road.
